About this blog

About this blog

A journal of my ideas on homeschooling. Also, a place to archive activities we've done and things we've learned along the way. I will showcase pros and cons of homeschool versus public school, as I work though these ideas and how they fit into my life. I, by no means, judge those who feel public school is a better fit for their family. It may be a better fit for our family one day too.

But where we sit right now is that the fit for our family is to have our children at home full-time. They are both not even school age. But our family's choice is to choose at home (and out in the world) care, learning and socialization by their mother (father, granparents, auntie) over daycare or preschool.

birdwatching

Homemade binoculars, because you don't really need real ones for that feeder one foot from the window.

field trip

We went on a field trip with BestStart. We took a bus with a bunch of 1-3 year olds and their moms, dads, grandparents. There were some daycare groups there when we arrived. I noticed that large group field trips, end up being kids corralled around to each activity and a big part of the day is spent trying to keep them together.

Our group, of parents and kids, moved from each activity as well, but the kids were getting individual attention. And because each kid (or sibling set) had an adult, we could leave the group when we were done with say pumpkin painting, check out the turkeys, and then return and continue on the tour.

not first day of school

So it is the first day of school today. And we are celebrating that it isn't. My little January boy was born 18 days after the cut off, which leaves me not having to make the school/homeschool decision this year. I'm all over the place on this one. Well not really. I feel pretty strongly for homeschool. The more research I do, the more I believe it is the best choice. But our culture, and the way things are done here, fights me at every chance. So we will take it one year at a time. This year, I get off easy on the decision thing. I just go with the flow. Here we are on our way to visit Anderson and Maeva's great-grandparents. Are they really missing out on socialization? I am socializing them, not twenty other 4 year olds.
